Go Deep

(Acts 1:1-11)

Read Acts 1:1-11. Pause to consider anything that catches your attention.

What is the significance of the word “began” in verse 1? What implications does it have for us?

Verse 3 speaks of “convincing proofs that [Jesus] was alive.” What convincing proofs do we know about?

What was Jesus’s primary topic of conversation and instruction during the 40 days between his resurrection and his ascension? Does this have implications for us?

What was the gift Jesus’s Father had promised? Is there any connection between this gift and the kingdom of God (vv. 3, 6)?

Did the disciples question in verse 6 come out of a misunderstanding and, if so, what didn’t they understand?

Does Jesus’s response in verse 7 imply that the kingdom will someday be restored to Israel?

Do you think we too might need to be told that “It is not for you to know the times of dates” when things will happen?

The disciples wanted to receive knowledge about the restoration of the kingdom, but they would receive power instead. Do you think the disciples were satisfied with what they got? Explain.

Jesus said the disciples would receive power. What is the source of this power? What can it accomplish? How is this power experienced?

Once they received power, the disciples would be witnesses. Is there any difference between being a witness and what Christians usually mean by witnessing?

Why would they need power to be witnesses?

Read verses 9-11 along with Daniel 7:13 and Matthew 28:18-20. Did Jesus’s ascension entail more than a departure from earth? Explain.

If the ascension is about Jesus’s enthronement as king, what difference ought that to make to us in everyday life? How can we keep this in mind?
