Go Deep (Ephesians 4:20-24)

Read verse 20. The Greek can be understood as literally “that is not the way you learned Christ.” What does it mean to “learn Christ?”

Read verse 21. What does it mean to be “taught in Christ?” What is the “truth that is in Jesus?” Why is it specifically in Jesus?

How does the truth that is in Jesus differ from the “truth” that is in the world? How have you seen this difference play out in people’s lives in the world around you?

Read verse 22-24. What do you think the “old self” looks like in mundane and ordinary life? How does the “old self” talk, what does it do, and what does it value?

We are “made new” or “renewed” in the attitude of our minds in an ongoing process, according to verse 23. How can one’s inward attitudes and thoughts show whether they are being renewed or not being renewed?

What is “the new self?” What does it mean that the new self is “created to be like God?”

How have you felt or sensed “the new person” in your own life as opposed to “the old person” you used to be? What differences have you seen, personally, between your new self and your old self?

In verse 24, the new self is created to be like God “in true righteousness and holiness.” What is “true righteousness?”

What does true righteousness look like in our day to day lives? What are some examples you’ve seen of Christians being truly righteous?

If the new self is a feature of our new identity in Christ, why does Paul still urge believers to live into it?

Do you think Paul’s concern for the new self is not only individual but also corporate? If so, how do you think the church can live into the new self as a body?
