I AM the True Vine, pt. 2 (John 15:1-8)
Read John 15:1-8.
What is the Gardener’s (or grape farmer’s) role?
Why does the Gardener cut off branches?
Just what is getting pruned in verse 2? What is the purpose of pruning?
In what sense were the disciples already clean (verse 3)?
By what means were the disciples cleaned? What instrument was used?
In what sense does Jesus’s word clean (or prune) someone? Can you think of an example from your own life?
Are there other means besides Jesus’s word by which a believer in Jesus is pruned?
Have you experienced “pruning” in your life? Of what did it consist?
Explain what it means to “remain” (or “abide,” “reside,” or “dwell”) in Jesus.
Would there be any observable differences between a person who abides in Jesus and one who doesn’t? If so, what might they be?
What is fruit, and why is it so important to God?
When Jesus says in verse 5 that apart from him you can do nothing, what does he mean?
Read verse 7. What could it mean that Jesus’s words remain (or abide) in some people? Is there something I can do so that Jesus’s words are more likely to remain in me?
Do you think remaining in Jesus is an automatic thing or do we have some part in it? If we have a part in it, what part is that?
What practices might someone engage in who is abiding in Jesus?
