Go Deep

(Luke 24:13-35)

Read Luke 24:13-35. Think through how these two disciples heading home after all that had just happened must have felt. What words would you use to describe them?

Verse 16 says, “They were kept from recognizing him” (lit., “their eyes were held not to recognize him.”) Why do you think these disciples did not recognize their Master?

The first two sentences Jesus spoke to these grieving disciples were questions. Why do you think that was?

Shayne suggested that in the dialogue between verses 19 and 24, two people seem to be speaking, sometimes in unison and sometimes interrupting each other. Does it seem that way to you? Why?

Just for fun: Some scholars think the unnamed disciple is Cleopas’ wife. What do you think? Can you find evidence in the text for your view?

The Emmaus disciples say that the chief priests had Jesus crucified. Why might the chief priests have wanted Jesus to die by crucifixion?

Read verse 21. What does this tell you about the Emmaus Road disciples?

Do you think, from the disciples’ description of what had happened, that they believed Jesus was alive? What makes you answer the way you did?

Jesus says that the two disciples are “foolish” (thoughtless) and “slow of heart.” Is it unkind of Jesus to say this? Do you think thoughtlessness and slowness of heart are commonly found together?

How do you think the disciples would have answered the question at the end of verse 25?

What Scriptures do you think Jesus brought up (verse 27)? A few to consider: Gen. 3:15; Numbers 21:4-9; Deut. 18:15; Psalm 22; Isa. 53; Micah 5:2; Zech. 9:9; 12:10; 13:7; Mal. 4:5-6;

Why might Jesus have “acted as if we were going further”? Do you think he would have left had they not pressed him to stay?

What does this passage have to say to us today? How can we apply it?
