Go Deep
(Colossians 3:1-11)
What did Shayne mean by “moving closer to yourself”?
Does it help to think of yourself as being pulled into the future rather than driven by your past?
How do you understand the talk about a false self and a truer, fuller self?
Read Colossians 2:18-23. How would you describe the message of the false teachers?
Read Colossians 3:1-11
In what sense have Christians been “raised with Christ”? (Compare Ephesians 2:6; Colossians 2:11-12.)
Does it strike you as true that there is more to you than you realize? Is that an encouraging or a frightening idea?
In what sense is your life “hidden with Christ in God” (Col. 3:3)? What does this mean for everyday life?
Verse 1 says that we are to “set [our] hearts on” (literally, we are to “seek”) things above? What does seeking “things above” entail?
Paul tells us to set our minds on things above. How might we do that? How might we avoid setting our minds on earthly things?
How does one “put to death whatever belongs to [the] earthly nature?” Is this any different from the “harsh treatment of the body” that Paul criticizes in 2:23 and, if so, how is it different?
Do we have a part to play in helping each other rid ourselves of the things listed in verse 8? What might such help involve?
What have you done previously that has helped you “seek things above”? Are you still doing it? If not, why did you stop?
What else speaks to you from this passage?
