Go Deep

(Genesis 1)

Read Genesis 1. List the ideas, concepts, questions that come to mind. What is encouraging? What is challenging?

Read this small selection of verses that refer to Yahweh as creator: Nehemiah 9:6; Psalm 19:1-4; 33:6; Isaiah 37:16; 45:18; Jeremiah 10:12; Hebrew 11:3; Revelation 4:11. Why do you think biblical authors continually bring up the fact that God created everything?

Each thing that God created – light, land masses, seas, plants, animals, and humans – God called good. What do you make of the fact that he later said, “It is not good for man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18)?

In Genesis 1, God caused there to be light even before he made sun and moon and stars. How could this be?

God is repeatedly said to bring things into being by speaking. What does this imply about God’s words, and why is this important?

The psalmist says that the heavens declare God’s glory (Psalm 19:1). Just how do the heavens declare God’s glory?

Man (humans – male and female) is the only creature that was made in God’s image, as far as we know. Does this make man special? Explain.

What does it mean that God created man in his own image? Does God look like humans? Do humans look like God? In what sense is this true?

God gave man dominion over fish, birds, and every earthbound creature. If man were to exercise that dominion as God intended, how would things be different than they are? Give specific examples.

Do you think that Adam and Eve knew they were to rule over every other living thing?

Think of Adam’s rebellion in the light of the human vocation to rule creation as God’s stewards. How does this shine a different light on Adam’s sin? (See Romans 8:18-22.)

What does Genesis 1 have to say to us today? How can we live in its light?
