Go Deep
(Matthew 2)
Read Matthew 2:1-12, noting anything that seems particularly meaningful to you.
In the light of God’s promise to David (an eternal throne and a descendant to rule on it), what thoughts might the Magi’s question and explanation (verse 1) produce on those who heard it?
From what you know of King Herod, how do you think he would respond to the Magi’s question?
Read verse 3. Why did “all Jerusalem” find the disturbance of King Herod so disturbing?
What does is say about King Herod’s knowledge of the Bible that he had to call in the experts to tell him where Messiah would be born?
How would you describe the priests and religious scholars in verse 5-6?
Why would Herod call the Magi secretly? Why did he ask about the exact time the star appeared?
Do you think the Magi had any clue that Herod was using them?
Would Herod have thought of his plan to kill the true king of the Jews as evil? How could a person get to the point that they could do such terrible things and not think of them as monsters?
In verse 11, the Magi bowed and worshipped. Was their worship the same kind of thing we do when we worship? Explain.
Why were the gifts of verse 11 important?
There was a flurry of miraculous events in Matthew 1 and 2: The angel’s appearance; Mary’s pregnancy; the star; the Magi’s dream-warning; God’s three communications with Joseph. What do these various miracles have in common?
