What, if anything, did you learn from the sermon on “covenant”?

If earth’s history were written as a play, how many acts would there be, and what would be the principal theme of each act?

Read Genesis 1:26-28. What is the role that God intended for humans to play?

Read Genesis 3:21-24. Why did God banish Adam and Eve from the Garden? Why would eating from the tree of life be a bad thing for them to do?

The word “curse” appears five times from Genesis 3-11. The word “bless” appears five times in the call of Abraham (Genesis 12 1-3). Why is this significant?

Did God give up on his original plan for the earth and for humanity – was Jesus’s sacrificial death Plan B? Explain your answer.

In the big picture of the Bible’s story, what was God doing through the covenant with Israel at Sinai (Exodus 19:3-8; 24:7-8)?

We see Israel fail to keep the covenant after the time of Joshua (Josh. 24:31; Judges 21:15), yet God establishes another covenant with David (2 Samuel 7:9-16; 2 Chron. 21:7; Ps. 89:3-4). Why do you think God did this?

In the exile, Israel is forced from the land (as was Abraham, and the patriarchs) and the covenant is again threatened. During this period, Jeremiah prophesied that God would make a new covenant. Read about the new covenant in Jer. 31:31-34.

What does God promise to do in the new covenant? Do his covenant partners have any role to play?

When is the new covenant to be enacted?

What does the story of the Bible, as told through the language of covenant, reveal to us about the character of God?

Based on what you understand regarding the new covenant, what is our responsibility to God? Does this have any implications for our relationships with each other?
