Go Deep
(John 14:1-11)
Read John 14:1-11. Make note of any insights you have into the text, into Jesus’s teaching, or into the disciples’ reactions.
Jesus says, “You know the way to the place I am going.” If someone said to you, “Can you tell me the way to the place Jesus was going?” how would you answer?
Jesus says that (v. 6) he is “the way, the truth and the life.” The way to where? The truth about what? What kind of life? What is he talking about?
Jesus says (v. 7), “If you really knew me, you’d know my Father as well.” Why does he say this? (Cf. John 1:14-18.)
Read verse 8: What do you think Philip wanted Jesus to do? How did Philip think this would help?
Read verse 9. What are the implications of Jesus’s question to Philip – what does it mean for us?
If you were one of the disciples, how would you understand what Jesus was saying in verse 9 (“Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father”)?
Read verse 10. In what sense are Jesus’s words the Father’s work?
How is the Father’s indwelling of Jesus a model of Jesus’s indwelling of us? (Consider verse 12.)
Read John 14:7. What does Jesus mean by “from now on?”
How does the cross reveal what God is like?
How did Philip and the others “know” God through the cross?
Why is the formula “(1) God is angry and will punish sinners; (2) Jesus took the punishment for us; (3) Therefore we can go to heaven” inadequate?
What is there in this passage to encourage our faith in God and our obedience to Christ?
