Go Deep

(John 21:1-22)

Read John 21:1-14. Jot down things that stand out to you. Share these things with someone if possible.

Some Bible teachers say that Peter and the others were wrong to go back to fishing after Jesus’s resurrection. What do you think? Why?

Read verse 4. Why did the disciples fail to recognize Jesus?

Do you think the fisherman appreciated the question of verse 5? Why do you think Jesus asked it?

The beloved disciple was the first to recognize Jesus. Why might this have been so?

Though the beloved disciple was the first to recognize the Lord, Peter was the first to take action. Do churches have both kinds of people? Are they both needed? Explain.

Compare John 21:3-6 with Luke 5:4-8. What do you see?

We can only speculate, but why do you think Peter jumped into the water and swam to Jesus?

Why do you think Jesus invited the disciples to share their fish when he already had some cooking? Did he not plan for enough, or might there be another reason?

Read verse 12. Why would these men, who had been with Jesus day and night for three years, even think of asking him who he was—wouldn’t they know?

Verse 13 says that “Jesus came…” Came from where? Why would he need to come when he was already there?

What events in this account would bring back memories to the disciples of previous experiences with Jesus?

Why do you think Jesus came and went during the 40 days after the resurrection? Why didn’t he just stay with the disciples as before?
