From the story of the healing of the blind man in John 9, what surprised you about the blind man? About the Pharisees? About Jesus?

Why do you think Jesus used mud and washing to heal the man rather than just doing it immediately by his word?

Why might the blind man’s neighbors and acquaintances not have recognized him after his healing?

Did the blind man’s parent’s do the right thing when questioned by the Pharisees? Have you ever been in a position to answer for your children? What were your feelings about that?

Read John 9:30-33. What strikes you about the blind man’s words to the Jewish leaders? Where did he learn to speak like this?

Why do you think God sent Jesus into our world? Read John 9:39.

Why does Jesus say that he came into the world?  Are the answers the same?

Why is blindness so often used metaphorically or as imagery for spiritual things?

Have you known anyone who is blind? What do you think are the most difficult things for them?

What do you think it means to be spiritually blind? What do you think that feels like?

Read John 9:39. We can probably understand why Jesus would say that he came to bring sight to the blind, but why does he say that he also came, “that those who see may become blind?”
