Go Deep

(Matthew 28:1-10)

Read Matthew 28:1-10.

Matthew tells us that Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to the tomb, but Mark mentions that Salome was with them. Luke says that Joanna and others also went to the tomb. How can these differences be reconciled?

Why did the women bring spices to the tomb when Nicodemus had already brought 75 pounds of spices to use in the Jewish burial ritual?

Do you think Jesus needed the angel to roll the stone from the tomb before he could come out? If not, why did the angel roll the stone away?

Does it strike you odd that the angel sat on the stone?

In the Matthew account, we read of one angel. In the Lucan account, we read of two “men.” Mark mentions one “man.” John says that Mary Magdalene saw two angels. Do these different accounts prove that there are errors in the Bible?

Why did the guards shake and pass out when the women did not?

The women were looking for Jesus in the wrong place. Do you think that people look for Jesus in the wrong place today? What are some of those “wrong places”?

The angel directs the women to tell the disciples that Jesus is going ahead of them into Galilee. (Jesus had told them about this before he died, Matthew 26:32, but they had forgotten.) Where is the place you are most likely to meet Jesus?

Women were the first witnesses to the resurrection and were sent to tell others, yet women were not allowed to testify in court because they were thought to be unreliable. Why would God reveal the resurrection first to women and made them witnesses of this most important event?

Jesus met the women as they hurried away to carry out their assignment. Do you think this has something to teach us today?

Explain why the resurrection of Jesus is important today, after almost 2,000 years?
