Go Deep
(Romans 5:1-11)
Read Romans 5:1-11. To what does the “Therefore” in verse 1 refer?
What does Paul mean by the word justified?
Paul says that we have peace with God because we have been justified “by faith.” Is there some other way to be justified? Do people think there is?
What does it mean to “have peace with God”? Is this primarily a feeling inside a person? If not, is there any connection to peaceful feelings? Explain.
What does it mean to stand in grace (verse 2)? What is so good about it? What would be the opposite of standing in grace?
Paul says (v. 2) that we “stand and boast in the glory of God” (literal translation; other translations use exult and rejoice). What does he mean by “boast in the glory of God”? Where does this boasting or rejoicing occur?
How might a person’s life be different if he/she began boasting in God’s glory?
Paul says we “also boast (rejoice) in our sufferings.” What is he talking about and why would anyone boast/rejoice in suffering? How can anyone rejoice in suffering?
Compare verse 3 to James 1:2-3. Do you think the early church found it easier to follow these instructions than we do? Would it be easier if everyone close to you was doing it? Explain.
Verse 4: Does suffering automatically produce “endurance” (perseverance)? If not, do we have a part in it and, if so, what is that part?
Paul writes that perseverance produces “character.” What is this character that is so important to the believer?
How might “character” produce hope? Hope for what? Hope in what?
Verse 5: Why is hope not disappointed? What is this love like that can fulfill our hopes?
