I AM the Resurrection and the Life (John 11)

Read John 11. Jot down any insights you may have.

Would you describe yourself more as a subjunctive person (thinking of what might have been or might yet be) or an indicative person (thinking of what is to be done)?

Verse 20: In what ways might Martha have heard that Jesus was coming?

The Greek word the NIV translates as “meet” in verse 20 often refers to a meeting in which conflict is expected. Do you think it might have that significance here? Why or why not?

Read verses 21-22. Do you think Martha was hoping Jesus would raise Lazarus when she said, “I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask”? What is the reason for your answer?

What did Jesus mean by saying, “I AM the resurrection” (v. 25)? How do you think Martha understood his statement?

What is the connection between Jesus being the resurrection and Jesus being the life? (cf. 1 John 5:12, 20)

When Jesus says that the person who believes in him will live, even though he dies (verse 25), to what is he referring?

How can Jesus say that the person who believes in him (v. 26) will never die?

Jesus asked Martha if she believed this (that he was the resurrection and the life and that those who believe in him will not die). She answered, “Yes.” Do you think she had a clear understanding of what Jesus meant?

Read John 11:33-35. Why do you think Jesus wept when he already knew he was going to raise Lazarus?

To what was Jesus referring when he prayed (v. 41), “Father, I thank you that you have heard me”?

Read verse 45. If Jesus had healed Lazarus 4 days earlier, would it have had the same effect on people?
