I AM the Way, and the Truth, and the Life (John 14:1-6)

Read John 13:21-38. How would you describe the atmosphere in the upper room where Jesus and his disciples celebrated Passover?

Read John 14:1-6. Does it seem possible to you that the disciples could have untroubled hearts after what Jesus just said—that he was leaving them and that their leader Peter would disown him?

What did Jesus have in mind when he told his disciples, “Do not let your hearts be troubled (v. 1)? Is this the same as saying, “Don’t worry” or “Don’t be upset”? Explain your answer.

What negative things might happen if we let our hearts be troubled? What might be the fallout?

Paraphrase verse 1 – put it into your own words. Jesus calls his friends to exercise trust (or belief). What would the exercise of trust entail in this context?

How is not letting one’s heart be troubled related to trusting God/Jesus?

What is the Father’s house? (See John 2:16; Luke 2:49.)

When Jesus said he was going to his Father’s house, how do you think his disciples understood this?

What is entailed in “preparing a place” (v. 2)?

Do you agree with Shayne that preparing a place for us is only part of what Jesus is doing – he is also preparing us for the place? What would be included in preparing us for the place Jesus has prepared?

How might the disciples have understood Jesus’s claim to be the way?

Jesus is the way … where?

In what sense is Jesus the truth?

What does it mean that no one comes to the Father, except through Jesus? Is this primarily about going to heaven when one dies? Explain your answer.

Can our hearts remain untroubled when we are frightened, confused, and threatened with pain and loss? How?
