I Am the Bread of Life, Part 2 (John 6)

 

Read John 6:35-58. What questions come to mind as you read this text?

 

What is the relationship between coming to Jesus, eating Jesus as the bread of heaven, and believing in Jesus?

 

Why does Jesus say his flesh is real food and his blood real drink? What is he getting at?

 

What is the relationship between believing in Jesus and eternal life? (See verses 40, 47.)

 

What are some obstacles to interpreting this passage as though it refers to eating the bread and drinking the cup of the Lord’s Supper?

 

What does it mean to believe in Jesus? What does it not mean—but people think it does?

 

Can a person truly believe in Jesus without fully believing in Jesus? Explain your answer.

 

Why is it misleading to think of “religious faith” as something different in nature than faith in other people we know?

 

Is it possible to trust someone without entrusting something? Can you think of an example of trust that does not include entrusting something of value?

 

What is it that a person entrusts to Jesus when he or she trusts (has faith in) him? Try to be specific.

 

Is trust in Jesus a one-time or an ongoing thing?

 

How can a person use the Communion time to trust Jesus – to entrust him/herself to him? Be practical: what are some things we can do?
